Definition
Where a brand sits when the answer gives an ordered list. When there is no list there is no position, and none should be invented.
If the answer says “1. Quantly, 2. Acme, 3. Beacon”, Acme is in position 2. If the answer is a paragraph that names three brands, there is no position: turning the first name in a sentence into a ranking is inventing the data.
That is why an average position has to say how many answers with a list it was calculated on. “Average position 2.4 across 9 answers with a list, out of 22 valid” can be defended; “average position 2.4” on its own cannot.
How mentions split between the brand and the competitors agreed beforehand, within the same sample of AI answers.
